Economic Development
As Tax Commissioner, I have had the privilege to work with and cultivate relationships with small business owners. I heard their frustrations as they work to balance providing jobs and generating profit while complying with the myriad of regulations placed on them from all levels of government. Small businesses are the driving force and the linchpin of our economy and community. They create and maintain jobs for our citizens and the revenue government needs to provide the essential services that our society needs.

I established, owned and managed three successful small businesses and still own investment property. Three of my four children are entrepreneurs. I know first hand and through relationships with other business owners how bureaucratic and arbitrary red tape often chokes our business community. This thick red tape that we have created over the years cost the government money to administer and our business community for compliance and deters prospective businesses from calling Athens home. For Athens to thrive, we must continue to cultivate a diverse economy of small business, industry, the service sector, and the University. These are the engines that create jobs and drive our economy.

Under my leadership and with your help, we will lose the business unfriendly label that has been applied to us. I will continue to reach out to and work with existing businesses, small and large, to find areas where we can streamline procedures and cut red tape. I will reach out and encourage other businesses to locate here to build our tax base and provide the jobs our citizens need. Athens with Nancy Denson as Mayor will be "Open for Business".
